Turkey has undertaken important missions since joining NATO in 1952 and continues to make significant contributions today.
Previously:
- The Turkish TCG YAVUZ and TCG TRAKYA frigates together with the Turkish TCG ERTUĞRUL and TCG KARAMÜRSEL amphibious ships served with 753 personnel as part of the multinational force created with a decision by the UN Security Council Decision to suppress the incidents in Albania in 1997.

Between 1993 and 1995, our country assigned a mechanised unit serving at the regiment level to the UNPROFOR military force established in 1993 to find a solution to the Bosnia-Herzegovina problem and to establish safe zones in the area.

Turkey has also contributed to the air force established to provide air support to the NATO Implementation Force (IFOR) and NATO Stabilization Force (SFOR) deployed in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Turkey also participated in “Operation Deny Flight” aimed at controlling the airspace of FR Yugoslavia with by deploying an F-16 fleet in Italy between the years of 1993 and 1995.
Currently;
- Taking her place in the top five countries contributing to NATO with 2,000 personnel, Turkey is the 8th highest contributor to NATO’s common budget. While we participate in the NATO Readiness Initiative with our Land, Naval and Air Force components, our country also continues contributing to NATO exercises, its force structure and staff despite the COVID-19 outbreak.

Turkey takes charge of NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) for 2021. Additionally, our 3rd Corps Command based in İstanbul has undertaken the duty of the Land Component Command of the Response Force (NRF 21 LCC).

A core component of the Alliance’s Command Structure, the NATO Land Command (LANDCOM) is located in our country.

As part of the Resolute Support Mission; Turkey runs the Train, Advise, Assist Command-Capital (Kabul) as one of the four framework countries and has also undertaken responsibility for the operation and force protection of Hamid Karzai International Airport since 2015.

Turkey contributes to the Kosovo Force Operation (KFOR) active in Kosovo with more than 900 personnel.

A total of 25 Turkish personnel are on duty in NATO Mission Iraq. We plan to contribute more in the upcoming period according to the expansion of the Mission.

Turkey provides more than 60 per cent of NATO’s recognised maritime picture (RMP / White Picture) for the Black Sea and at least 40 per cent for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Our country is the third largest contributor to Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG-2) among thirty NATO members, and is the second largest contributor to NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures Maritime Group-2 (SNMCMG-2).

Turkish aircraft contribute to NATO with their 24-hour ‘Quick Reaction Alert’ state of readiness and modus operandi in 9 airfields.
*Since 2015, Turkish AEW&C aircraft have supported NATO’s Assurance Measures (AM) with 2 sorties per month and Operation Sea Guardian (OSG) with 3-4 sorties per month.
- As part of the Assurance Measures (AM), 4 sorties of air refuelling support have been provided monthly to AEW&C aircraft and NATO AWACS aircraft taking part in Ukraine and Coalition-NATO missions.

Since 2011, Turkey has been hosting an early warning radar which is one of the components of NATO’s Ballistic Missile Defence programme.

Turkey has been hosting NATO-accredited training centres such as the NATO Centre of Excellence for the Defence Against Terrorism (COE-DAT), the Multinational Maritime Security Centre Of Excellence (MARSEC-COE), and the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Training Centre.
