The statement issued by the U.S. Department of Defense stated that Turkey’s order for Lot-14 F-35 fighter jets would undergo various modifications to be handed over to U.S Air Force.
The contract stated,
“This modification exercises options to procure eight Lot 14 F-35A Lightning II repositioned aircraft as a result of the Republic of Turkey’s removal from the F-35 program, and six Lot 14 F-35A aircraft for the Air Force”
A total of 14 Lot 14 F-35 fighter jets under the contract, worth approximately $850 million, are expected to undergo modification and transactions may last until 2026.
The crisis between the United States and Turkey originating from Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 was further deepened by the last step of the United States. Under this contract, aircraft that have not yet been delivered to Turkey but the aircraft ordered by Turkey will be handed over to the US military.
The future of other 6 F-35s not delivered to Turkey is not yet clear.
