Ganunu: Liberation of Sirte and Jufra more urgent than ever
The liberation of Sirte and Jufra from Russian mercenaries and local criminal gangs, tracking down wherever they may flee in Libya have become more urgent and compulsory than ever, the UN-recognized Government of National Accord army spokesperson Colonel Mohammed Ganunu said.
In a meeting held on June 27,2020, “Debates over ceasefire are meaningless when Sirte and Jufra have been occupied by foreign mercenaries” said Ganunu. “Foreign mercenaries deployed in the locations above are equipped with weapons supplied by the countries that support the Haftar. As such, the same countries are responsible for the deployment of Russian, Syrian and African mercenaries. They aim to control the Libyan oil fields in the regions. ”
After GNA forces gained control at Watiyya Air Base, southwest of the capital Tripoli, on May 18, 2020, the regions where the putschist Hafter forces had kept under control of Tripoli for more than 1 year came under GNA control again. As of June 11, 2020, GNA forces have continued their preparations to make progress around the air bases in Sirte and Jufra.
